Get up early on day 2 of your Tanzania safari, and travel from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Sit back and enjoy the journey: the road winds over the Great Rift Valley, through the crater forest and ending at your final destination: the striking Ngorongoro Crater.

This collapsed volcano is one of Tanzania’s most visited destinations, and it’s certainly not hard to see why. One of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders, the crater is home to the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa and is brimming with elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos and even the rare black rhino, birds and flowers. Sometimes herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen around the Tarangire River, drinking from the shallows or enjoying a cooling mud bath. In the area around these swamps you can also see lions, leopards, Giraffe and even tree-climbing pythons. Spread across an area of 2,850 square kilometers, Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's sixth-largest national park. It derives its name from the Tarangire River, which flows through the park and serves as a lifeline for the region's diverse wildlife. The park is known for its iconic baobab trees, vast savannahs, and a high concentration of wildlife.
