Machame Camp

 The first leg of the journey is the climb from Machame Gate to Machame Camp.

 

Climb from Machame Gate to Machame Camp:

Distance: The hike from Machame Gate to Machame Camp covers approximately 10-12 kilometers (6-7.5 miles) on the first day, depending on the specific starting point.


Time: This segment of the climb usually takes around 5-7 hours to complete, depending on your pace and fitness level.


Altitude: Machame Gate is situated at around 1,490 meters (4,888 feet) above sea level, while Machame Camp is at approximately 2,980 meters (9,777 feet) above sea level. So, you'll gain about 1,490 meters (4,889 feet) in altitude on this day.

 


Amenities at Machame Camp:

 

Machame Camp is a basic campsite, and the amenities are relatively limited compared to some other routes on Kilimanjaro. You can expect to find:


Tent accommodations: You'll sleep in tents provided by your tour operator. These are typically two-person tents.


Dining tent: There is a communal dining tent where you'll have your meals.


Toilet facilities: Basic long-drop pit toilets are available, but they can be quite primitive.


No running water or showers: Be prepared for basic facilities; water for washing is typically provided in a basin.

 


Weather and Temperature:

 

Weather can vary significantly on Kilimanjaro, but generally, the Machame Gate to Machame Camp section is characterized by tropical rainforest conditions.
Expect warm and humid conditions at the lower elevations (Machame Gate), with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F).
As you gain altitude, temperatures will drop, and at Machame Camp, it can get quite cold at night, with temperatures often dropping to around freezing or even below.

 


Flora and Fauna:

 

This part of the climb is through the lush rainforest zone. You'll encounter a variety of plant and animal life, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a wide array of bird species.
The rainforest is teeming with vibrant flora, including mosses, ferns, giant lobelias, and numerous species of trees and plants.

 


Difficulty:

 

The hike from Machame Gate to Machame Camp is considered moderate in terms of difficulty. The trail is well-maintained and relatively wide, although it can be steep and slippery in places, especially if it has rained.
It's important to pace yourself and acclimatize properly, as the altitude gain is significant. It's advisable to hike slowly and steadily to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
Overall, the first day on the Machame Route offers a challenging but beautiful start to your Kilimanjaro climb, with a transition from lush rainforests to higher altitudes where the landscape begins to change.
