 Climbing to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

 

Distance: The hike from Londorosi Gate to Mti Mkubwa is approximately 7-8 kilometers (4-5 miles) long, and it usually takes around 3-4 hours to complete. The pace may vary depending on the group and weather conditions.


Altitude:
Mti Mkubwa is situated at an altitude of about 2,820 meters (9,250 feet) above sea level. This means you'll gain approximately 570 meters (1,868 feet) in elevation during this part of the climb.


Terrain: The trail from Londorosi Gate to Mti Mkubwa passes through lush rainforests, characterized by dense vegetation, including ferns, mosses, and various types of trees. The path is generally well-maintained and not overly steep, making it relatively easier compared to some of the steeper sections higher up on the mountain.


Weather: As you ascend, the weather gradually becomes cooler and less humid. It's important to layer your clothing appropriately to accommodate these changing conditions.


Temperature: At Mti Mkubwa, the temperature can drop to around 10-15°C (50-59°F) during the day and even lower at night. It's advisable to be prepared for cooler temperatures at this elevation, especially after sunset.


Flora and Fauna: In the rainforest section between Londorosi Gate and Mti Mkubwa, you'll encounter a variety of plant and animal species. This includes colobus monkeys, various bird species, and a lush array of vegetation.

However, as you gain altitude, the lower oxygen levels can make it feel more challenging, and it's crucial to pace yourself and acclimatize properly.
