Barafu Camp

The climb from Barafu Camp to the Summit (Uhuru Peak) and then down to Mweka Camp on the Lemosho Route is the most challenging and rewarding section of the Mount Kilimanjaro ascent. This leg involves the final push to reach the highest point in Africa and then descending to lower altitudes for recovery.

Route Description:

From Barafu Camp, climbers begin their summit attempt in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight. The trail ascends through rocky terrain, known as the "scree," in the darkness. Climbers will pass through Stella Point (5,739 meters or 18,831 feet) before reaching the ultimate goal, Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet). After spending some time at the summit, climbers descend to Mweka Camp.

Time Required:

The summit climb from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak typically takes around 6 to 8 hours, while the descent to Mweka Camp takes about 5 to 7 hours. The durations can vary based on the pace of the climbing group, weather conditions, and the physical fitness of the climbers.

Amenities:

At both Barafu Camp and Mweka Camp, climbers will find basic amenities to accommodate their needs. These campsites usually provide tents for accommodation and have toilet facilities available. The amenities at Mweka Camp are more comprehensive as you descend to lower altitudes.

Weather:

At the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, temperatures can be extremely cold due to the high altitude. During the summit night climb, temperatures can range from -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F). The weather conditions can be harsh, with strong winds and potential snow or frost.

Altitude and Temperature at Uhuru Peak:

Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and is situated at an altitude of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. The altitude and cold temperatures at this height require climbers to be well-prepared and equipped with appropriate cold-weather gear.

Flora and Fauna:

At these extreme altitudes, the environment is harsh, and vegetation is scarce. Climbers are unlikely to encounter any substantial flora or fauna on this section of the climb.

Difficulty Level:

The climb from Barafu Camp to the Summit to Mweka Camp is the most challenging part of the Kilimanjaro ascent. The ascent to the summit is physically demanding due to the steep and rocky terrain, as well as the effects of altitude. Climbers should be prepared for a grueling and mentally taxing effort. The descent to Mweka Camp can also be demanding on the knees and joints, so proper care is necessary.

In conclusion, the climb from Barafu Camp to the Summit (Uhuru Peak) and down to Mweka Camp on the Lemosho Route is a culmination of the journey and a test of climbers' determination and physical capabilities. While it is undoubtedly challenging, reaching the summit and completing the descent is a remarkable achievement. Climbers must be well-prepared, both physically and mentally, for the intense conditions and the rewarding experience of standing on the "Roof of Africa."
