Horombo Hut

 Altitude: Mandara Hut is located at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) above sea level, while Horombo Hut is situated at around 3,720 meters (12,205 feet). This means you'll gain over 1,000 meters (about 3,347 feet) in altitude during this climb.

 

Weather: The weather on Mount Kilimanjaro can be unpredictable, but generally, the lower elevations, including Mandara Hut, are relatively warm and may experience rain. As you ascend towards Horombo Hut, the temperature drops significantly, and you may encounter cold winds, fog, and even snow, especially at night.

Horombo Hut: Horombo Hut, your second overnight stop, is larger and better equipped than Mandara Hut. It offers similar dormitory-style accommodations but with more capacity. There's also a dining area, a small shop, and more extensive restroom facilities. Horombo Hut has a better view of the surrounding landscape.

 

Flora and Fauna: During this part of the climb, you'll transition from the lush rainforest of Mandara to the heath and moorland zone as you approach Horombo. You may encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including different plant species like giant lobelias and senecios. You might also spot some wildlife such as monkeys, birds, and if you're lucky, larger animals like buffaloes and elephants.

 

Difficulty: The hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut is considered moderately challenging. The trail is well-maintained and relatively wide. However, the altitude gain can make it physically demanding, and it's important to pace yourself and pay attention to your body's signals. This section of the climb is not technically difficult, but altitude-related symptoms can affect trekkers.

 

Cold at Altitude: As you ascend to Horombo Hut, the temperature drops significantly, especially at night. It can get very cold, and temperatures often drop below freezing, so you'll need warm clothing, including a good quality sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures.

Overall, the climb from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut is a vital part of the Marangu Route journey. It offers a transition from the lower, warmer rainforest to the higher, colder alpine zone, providing a unique and varied trekking experience on your way to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
